Oral cancer currently kills about one person every hour in America. But with proper prevention, such as regular oral cancer screenings, people diagnosed with oral cancer have an 80 - 90% survival rate.

Metro Dentalcare speaks with Brian Hill of the Oral Cancer Foundation.

In our recent chat with Brian Hill, founder of the Oral Cancer Foundation, Hill explained that the biggest problem in the fight against oral cancer is awareness and lack of early detection.

"Two-thirds of all oral cancer is found at stages 3 or 4 - when it's deadly," Hill explained. He went on to say that if dental professionals regularly perform oral cancer screenings, preventing and curing oral cancer has a very high success rate.

"Oral cancer kills more people than skin cancer, brain cancer, or prostrate cancer. Oral cancer kills 24 people a day, and yet nobody seems to know about it," Hill said. "When it's caught in the 1st stage or earlier, a patient has a 90% chance of full recovery."

ViziLite Plus.

In addition to oral cancer training, dentists at Metro Dental use a special supplemental technology to help in oral cancer screenings called ViziLite Plus. This advanced light technology helps detect oral abnormalities, ensuring our patients receive the most comprehensive oral cancer screening possible.

ViziLite Plus is a simple, painless and non-invasive technology that improves the doctor's ability to visualize, mark, evaluate and monitor suspicious areas at their earliest stages, before they can progress to something far more serious, and potentially life-threatening. ViziLite Plus helps the doctor see what can't be seen with the unaided eye. Metro Dentalcare recommends that your dentist perform an oral cancer screening during every annual check-up. For more information on ViziLite Plus visit the ViziLite Plus Patient Site.

Regular Dental Check-ups Are Important

It is now easier than ever to detect oral cancer early, when the opportunity for a cure is great. Currently only half of all patients diagnosed with oral cancer survive more than five years. Regular dental check-ups, including an examination of the entire mouth, are essential in the early detection of cancerous and pre-cancerous conditions. You may have a very small, but dangerous, oral spot or sore and not be aware of it.*
